Show Me Where: The Assistant That Opens the Page and Lights Up the Row

Ask a chatbot where invoice 2026-14 is and you get a sentence. Ask the assistant inside Firmspace and the screen changes: Finance opens, the invoice filter is applied, the table scrolls to the row, and a frame appears around it. The sentence is still there, but it is no longer the only thing you have to trust.

The assistant has a small set of screen tools. One opens a section with the right tab and filter, one finds a piece of text on the page you are looking at and marks it, one opens the card of a deal, a contact or a company, and one scrolls. None of them writes anything. That last property is what makes the others acceptable.

The navigation tool builds a URL instead of clicking through menus. You can ask for Finance with the unpaid invoices filter, or for the warehouse stock view with its own inner tab: balances, stock documents or reports. The page arrives already configured, so nobody has to guess on which tab the answer lives.

Before opening anything, the assistant checks whether this person may see the section at all. The screen tools inherit the same rights as the rest of the assistant: no access to Finance means no jump to Finance, only an honest answer that the section is closed for this account.

Finding is the interesting part, because it happens in the browser. The assistant does not search a database copy of the page; it walks the text that is actually rendered, skips hidden elements, and ignores its own panel. What it looks for is a fragment you named: a customer, a SKU, a barcode, a document number.

When it finds matches, up to five rows or cards are marked, the page scrolls to the first one, and the frame pulses a few times before it settles. The mark stays until you click somewhere or about twenty-five seconds pass. The click listener is attached a moment later on purpose, so the click that opened the page does not wipe the highlight instantly.

Tabs and tables do not appear in the same instant. The browser retries for up to eight seconds, several times a second, and after a jump from another section it waits briefly for the new tab to draw before searching, so it cannot light up a row on the page you have just left.

If nothing matches, nothing is marked. The assistant then says the item was not found on this page, which is a better answer than a confident sentence about a row that is not there. The tool has no way to invent a highlight; a highlight is proof that the text exists on the screen.

Opening a card is the second half of the same idea. Instead of describing a deal, the assistant opens it: the board, the record, the fields you wanted to see. For a new colleague this is how the interface is learned — not from a manual, but from being shown the exact place where the number lives.

The separation from writing is deliberate. Opening a page is not permission to change it, and the screen tools are marked as read-only in the assistant's own catalogue. Anything that writes still asks for confirmation, and destructive operations sit outside this small set entirely.

External agents do not get these tools at all. The MCP connection that lets an outside AI client work with the CRM explicitly hides navigation, scrolling, card opening and document download. An outside agent may read and propose; it may not drive the owner's screen. The screen belongs to the person sitting in front of it.

The limits are worth stating. The search finds only what is rendered: a record on another filter, on page three, or behind a closed accordion will not be found until you open it. The eight-second window covers a slow tab, not a slow decision.

The practical habit is to ask in the language of showing: open, show, find. Show the unpaid invoices, find the contact from this morning, open that deal. If the wrong row lights up, add a distinctive detail — a number, a company, a date — and let the browser do the second pass. The best answer in a business tool does not end with a paragraph. It ends with the right row outlined and the person able to check it in one glance.
